I (heart) NY

Sunday, February 23rd, 2003

Yes, I know, I stole that title from a Sex and The City episode. Although, come to think of it, the mood of the trip was more like “New York State of Mind.”  So, last weekend I went to the Big Apple for my FIRST visit, and it was quite possibly the WORST timing ever. There was a blizzard going through the northeast, which I wanted to ignore, and it ended up being about 15 degrees the entire trip. But don’t get the wrong idea, I loved the city. I can’t wait to go back when it’s at least 50 outside. Transportation is dirt cheap, if you take the Chinatown bus it’s only $15 each way. On the way there I was surrounded by college antiwar protestors- I think they were smokin’ the dope.

So what time does the rally start?

Hmm. I don’t know. Hey Tom! Do you know what time it starts? (NO!) I don’t know.

Right. Where’s it being held?

Hmm, not really sure about that either. Hey Tom! Do you know where this thing is at? (NO!) I don’t know?

Sounds great.

I spent most of the trip with my cousin’s fiance’s family, who are all Asian and eat strictly Asian cuisine. I had approximately 20 meals with them and I was only there for two days.

Do you want some shrimp?

No thanks, I don’t like seafood.

No seafood?? Are you sure, it’s great stuff.

Nope, that’s ok, don’t like any sort of seafood.

(2 minutes pass)

How about some fried calamari?

Umm, yeah, that’s still seafood. So…no. Thanks.

But it’s really really good!

It’s really good?? Jesus, you didn’t tell me that. I completely take back not liking seafood, ever. Bring that shit over here.

Ha, so I didn’t really say that to them, but my God, please take a hint. I don’t like the stuff. And the fact that “it’s good”? what do they think, I only hate shitty seafood?

The rest of the trip consisted of me staying indoors whenever possibly, getting a facial (where they used a scalpel on me, I’m not kidding), and being stuck in Penn Station for 4.5 hours. I made it to Boston at 1am on Monday morning, to Back Bay Station, which was getting ready to close. Of course, the worker there tells us that he doesn’t think the taxis are running right now, since there is a BLIZZARD outside, and proceeds to shut the doors. Ok, that’s fine, I’ll just start walking to the main road. But wait, there are no main roads, as all the roads have been flooded by snow and it’s just one big winterland hell. There were three vehicles in sight (sight being about 50 feet visibility either way) and two of them were snow plows. After fighting some people, I was able to grab a cab and get home at 2am, only to find my road snowed over and I had to walk (fall, walk, fall) to my apartment.

My work called at 9am to let me know that I had to come in or I wouldn’t be paid. Apparently, having Mit Romney (governor) say we should all stay home is not good enough for them.
